It's an American Scream
FANTASTIC BEASTS FIRST REVIEW By Jamie East
YOU didn’t expect them to let the Potter universe disappear as if by magic, did you?
From the second the theme tune kicks in, you feel familiar and comfy — and it really seems like Christmas is around the corner.
But we are in 1920s New York and this is wizarding American style. Beasts are banned in the US and Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne, is a magizoologist trying to protect them.
Problem is, he’s rubbish at looking after them and is hotfooting it around trying to find the blooming things. Evil is also afoot, including the mysterious dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald.
The brilliant no-maj (muggle in American speak) Jacob, played by Dan Fogler, just about steals every scene he’s in. But Redmayne plays the lead well. There are plenty of scares, gasps of surprise, fun creatures and lots and lots to laugh at.
Fantastic Beasts is a triumph, so sit back and allow this to become, well, the new Harry Potter I guess. There’s no higher accolade!
SUN RATING: FOUR STARS
